What The President Says

What FactCheck.org Says

There is no evidence to back up Trump’s blanket claim that “mailed ballots are corrupt.” Voting experts say the president is exaggerating when he says mail ballots are “fraudulent in many cases.” While the instances of voter fraud via mail-in or absentee ballots are more common than in-person voting fraud, the number of known cases is relatively rare.

What May Really be Going On

There are several lines of thought on this, including that the President is right, and that even Jimmy Carter agrees. Except that was in 2005, and reforms since have convinced Carter otherwise.

The deeper concern is that the President is setting himself and his followers up to discredit a loss come November. Oh, and in a pandemic, mail-in ballots can help ensure voter turnout, something some people don’t want.
